Shinobi Story Online's combat system includes a set of abilties referred to as "jutsu." Jutsu means technique and have many different uses. Jutsu refers not only to abilities, but certain skills, masteries, and a number of other things. Technique is a broad concept, and jutsu is used by almost everyone in Shinobi Story Online.

Ninjutsu

Ninjutsu (忍術; Literally meaning "Ninja Techniques") refers to any technique that utilises chakra[1] and allows the user to perform actions that a normal person otherwise would be incapable of doing. Unlike genjutsu[2], which causes the opponent to experience illusions, the effects of Ninjutsu[3] are actual and physical in most cases. Ninjutsu relies on chakra and, most of the time, Hand seals[4] to be effective.

The hands are put in sequential positions that moulds and manipulates chakra in the necessary manner to perform a jutsu. This is not always needed, however, and some jutsu become second nature to experienced ninja, after which they can perform them at will. Additionally, many ninjutsu can be classified as an elemental jutsu, in those cases where a specific element (wind, water, fire, earth, or lightning) is used.

In Shinobi Story Online, Ninjutsu is practiced by Shinobi, and forbidden to be learned by other classes. Ninjutsu is used as the main 'damage dealer' ability in Shinobi Story Online. Most Ninjutsu causes damage, and some reverses damage. Ninjutsu has a great deal of variety when it comes to usage, and is a very powerful combat tool.

Genjutsu

Genjutsu (幻術; Literally meaning "Illusionary Techniques") are techniques that are employed in the same fashion as ninjutsu, requiring chakra and hand seals. However, the primary difference between the two is that the effects of genjutsu are illusory; instead of attacking the victim's body, like taijutsu or ninjutsu, genjutsu techniques manipulate the flow of chakra in the victim's brain, thus causing a disruption in their senses.Genjutsu fittingly falls under the broad category of Yin Release[5]Genjutsu[6]

This is often used to create false images or to cause pain from trauma (because the body is led to believe it is in pain); however, there are plenty of other uses depending on the situation. They are not used as often as ninjutsu because they don't physically harm the opponent, but many shinobi have made themselves well-known for their great prowess with genjutsu like. Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others, similar to brainwashing by feeding the victim illusive suggestions. However, there exists at least one genjutsu, Izanagi[7], that has the opposite effects to normal genjutsu, by changing reality to illusion and vice versa.

Genjutsu is created when a ninja extends their chakra flow through the cerebral nervous system of their opponent to control their mind's chakra, thereby affecting their five senses. Those with special abilities like the Uchiha clan's[8] Sharingan[9] or with high intelligence have an easier time executing and countering genjutsu, as attention to detail is key. Those under the influence of genjutsu will either appear to be unconscious or continue to move around under the pretence of the genjutsu. The latter is very effective in battle as a genjutsu user can make themselves appear to be somewhere else and attack the victim from behind or change the environment to make the victim see a flat plain where there is a steep cliff.

Genjutsu attacks usually require a lot of skill, and, if performed incorrectly, will not work.Genjutsu is most often used by ninja with very precise chakra control and very high intelligence.

In Shinobi Story Online, code-wise, Genjutsu is mainly used for stunning opponents. They freeze your opponent in place so that you may hammer away at them with your entire arsenal of techniques. Some hard-coded Genjutsu go beyond just stunning however. Genjutsu from an IC standpoint differs for each user. Genjutsu is practiced by Shinobi, and dabbed into by Priests.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu (体術; Literally meaning "Body Techniques") is a basic form of techniques that typically does not require chakra, though chakra may be used to enhance its techniques. Taijutsu generally require no hand seals to perform and are much quicker to use than ninjutsu or genjutsu. Taijutsu is simply put: hand-to-hand combat.

Although it is used by nearly all ninja, some characters use taijutsu almost exclusively, and are referred to as Taijutsu Specialists, they're experts of many taijutsu techniques. Example of taijutsu techniques are Dynamic Entry [10] and Leaf Whirlwind [11]. The Hyūga clan's[12]Gentle Fist[13], however, makes extensive use of chakra and demands great skill in its control. The taijutsu techniques are the right choices for those that want to save their time and chakra, or for those who rely on their physical attributes. It can also be used uniquely in collaboration with ninjutsu to create nintaijutsu [14] techniques.

Kenjutsu

Kenjutsu (剣術; Literally meaning "Sword Technique") pertains to techniques that entail the use of swords, whether the users be shinobi or samurai. Kenjutsu can be used in combination with taijutsu, ninjutsu and/or chakra flow in order to achieve more devastating techniques.

The entire military might of the collective samurai faction of the Seinaru Kenouhou, have so-far all been depicted as practitioners of kenjutsu. Among the shinobi nations, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist are particularly well known as kenjutsu practitioners. Also, a majority of Kumogakure shinobi are swordsmen.

Fuuinjutsu

Fūinjutsu (封印術; Literally meaning "Sealing Techniques") are a type of jutsu[15] that seals objects, living beings, chakra, along with a wide variety of other things within another object. An imbalance is created when an odd-numbered seal is placed on top of an even-numbered seal and vice-versa.

Doujutsu

Dōjutsu (瞳術; Literally meaning "Eye Techniques") are genetic ninja abilities that utilize the eyes, granting the wielder ocular abilities. Being a by-product of specific kekkei genkai, dōjutsu are not classified as one of the major jutsu types. They do not require the use of hand seals and sometimes facilitate in the use or defence against genjutsu, taijutsu and ninjutsu and then defeat his or her opponent. All known dōjutsu also provide the user with some unique abilities, such as an extended field of vision or predictive capabilities. The use of dōjutsu consumes chakra.

By transplanting the eye in question, it is possible for people to possess the dōjutsu, despite not being in the clan that the dōjutsu originates from. Among all known dōjutsu, there are three that are known collectively as the "Great Three Dōjutsu" (大三瞳術, Daisan Dōjutsu; Literally meaning "Great Three Eye Techniques").

Clan Jutsu

Hiden Jutsu

Hiden (秘伝; Literally meaning "Secret") techniques are passed down from generation to generation in certain regions or clans.

The groups possessing these techniques are usually extremely secretive about them. They ensure that no one other than the members of the group learn them. Only a few hiden techniques require a special ability or lineage. These techniques are usually the pride and fame of the clan that possesses them. The Nara clan's Shadow Imitation Technique and the Aburame clan's Parasitic Destruction Insect Technique are some examples of this.

They are not to be confused with kekkei genkai, a technique that require a specific genetic ability, as technically, hiden techniques can be taught to anyone.

In Shinobi Story Online, anything can be a hiden jutsu as long as you're willing to keep the jutsu for a select group. It helps that once you obtain the jutsu, and you're the only one with said jutsu, you inform the administrators that you want it locked off so that only you can teach it, and thus you'll likely be the only source.
